How to create a location-independent life

Most coaches want the freedom to choose how and when to work—and for many, that means pursuing a location-independent life.

But what does it really mean to be location-independent? Why is it so important? And how can you achieve it? And do I need to live a digital nomad lifestyle?

First off: living a free life allows you to travel and experience new places, feel free and indipendent. It also allows you to spend more time with family and friends, which is something we think we all want a little more of.

The best part? Not only is it possible for anyone—but it’s easier than you might think.

Here are our top steps for creating a location-independent life:

Figure out your WHY for leaving the corporate world

Many people start out with a vague idea of what they want to do next in their careers. This is fine, but it’s also important to know why you’re leaving your job or occupation.

  • Do you want your work to mean something?
  • Are you looking to join the tribe of digital nomads?
  • Are you looking for more freedom and flexibility?
  • Do you want more money or better benefits?
  • Are there changes you want to make in your life that is only possible if your work supports them?

It’s perfectly okay not to have all the answers, but it helps if you can narrow things down into a few specific areas.

Establish your time frame for leaving

After you’ve figured out your reasons for wanting to live an independent life and are ready to pursue it, it’s time to sit down and map out the exact steps you’ll need to take in order to make that happen. Start by setting a date for yourself. Then work backward from there, figuring out what kinds of goals you need to accomplish along the way.

If your goal is to start living a location-independent lifestyle in four months, set up weekly or monthly deadlines so that you have all of your ducks in a row when the day arrives. This will allow you to focus on one piece of the puzzle at a time without letting anyone part slip through the cracks.

Not sure where exactly you should begin? Consider talking with someone who has already done what you’re trying to do. You can also book a call with us for some tips and tricks.

The last step is preparation—ensuring that everything goes smoothly when your big day arrives. The more planning and preparation that can be done ahead of time, the better off everyone will be once they hit their deadline. And be sure to have your Online business set up Ahead of this!

Whatever choices you make, the best suggestion I can give you is this: You only have this life. Make the most of it. Travel if that's what you desire and dream of, and live YOUR life. Because by the end of all this, you will regret that you played it safe and that you did not follow your heart!

Focus on quitting your J-O-B, and starting your own business!

I want to be clear about this and say that you need to quit your job, but not necessarily start a business. If you are working a job, you have an income stream. And if you’re planning on quitting your job, then you need an income stream of some kind. Period. End of story.

But the truth is — starting a new business can be pretty challenging.  So you need to have things set up in a way that makes sense!

So here’s what I suggest: take what you’re doing right now at your job, figure out how to simplify it and automate it, and teach other people how to do it so they can leave their jobs as well. The money will come if you help others! And coaching and supporting others, or teaching what you know is, in my humble opinion the most fun way to earn a living! 🙂

Create an income stream before you leave

If you’re planning to travel for longer than a few months, it’s going to be important for you to figure out how you want to earn an income. You can make this decision easier on yourself by thinking about these questions:

  • How much money do you need to live comfortably?
  • What are some jobs that would allow you the flexibility and freedom to work while traveling?
  • How many hours a week would you need or want to work?

It’s helpful if your income stream is something that can scale with your lifestyle—this will give it the ability to grow right along with you as your life changes.

Some good suggestions could be online courses, working as a virtual assistant, or my favorite suggestion – as a coach!

Also, keep in mind that there are different rules and regulations regarding employment overseas and remote workers (especially when it comes to visas), so make sure that you plan with the legal questions in mind from the get-go!

Simplify your life

If you’re like most people, you probably have a lot of stuff. At some point, the things you own start to own you instead of the other way around. If you want to be location-independent, simplify your life and limit the things that weigh you down.

Here are some tips for doing just that:

  • Declutter your life as soon as possible by getting rid of everything that doesn’t bring value to your life. Start this process now, because it may take a while. When in doubt about whether to keep something or not, remember: if it’s worth less than $20 and it’s non-sentimental, get rid of it!

  • Make sure everything that remains is portable. Not only does this mean avoiding bulky items (i.e., furniture), but also making sure the remaining items are easily transported via airplane or shipped via mail without breaking the bank. This will give you greater freedom later on when moving from place to place–you won’t need to go buy all new stuff every time!

  • Learn how to say no when offered material possessions from friends and family members who don’t understand your lifestyle choices and think that giving stuff away is a good way of showing their affection for you.

The default response should always be “no,” but there may be instances where saying yes is appropriate (for example, someone wants to give away an item they think might benefit you). In those cases, feel free to accept–but only on the condition that they never offer anything else!  Do not let them become dependent upon giving things away as an emotional crutch! Be polite but firm in rejecting any further offers so they can move past this phase with their dignity intact 🙂

Plan for travel or living abroad

Living a location-independent life is not just another career path; it’s a lifestyle. The idea of doing your own thing and living independently of the usual trappings of living in a city is appealing to many people—and can be done on a budget. While some might find this lifestyle too expensive or too difficult, what you are looking at here is every possible way to get there: travel, savings, and value for money with little effort.

And remember, most countries outside the USA and most of Europe are less expensive to live in, so you will save money by living there!

Some people dream of Costa Rica or Chiang Mai, others dream about mountains and snow but at the end of the day, it’s all down to where you want to spend your time!

Be ready to lose friends (and make new ones!)

You may also lose some friends. Losing friends isn’t a foregone conclusion, but it’s very likely that when you change your lifestyle and pursue a location-independent life, you will lose some of your old friends.

Many of them will not understand why you want to leave behind the safe, comfortable lifestyle they know and love.

Others won’t like the fact that your priorities no longer align with theirs.

For example, if their idea of fun is going to a bar every weekend to watch football games and yours is traveling around the world, then it’s unlikely you will have much in common anymore.

However, remember this: don’t worry about losing these people because you will make new friends with people who share your values and interests!

The best part about this is that there are communities all around the world who share similar values as you do! It might take some time (and travel), but I guarantee that if you look hard enough, there are people out there just like you living the kind of life you want to live!

Find a like-minded community!

In order to create a location-independent life or even a nomadic lifestyle,, you need to surround yourself with other like-minded people. It’s important to find a peer group or mastermind that can help you brainstorm ideas and keep you accountable. Having a sounding board is essential for discovering new opportunities and suggestions that you may not find on your own. It’s also great to have people in your life to share your exciting discoveries with!

A bit of planning can help you give up the grind and create a life you enjoy

It is a great idea to plan the major aspects of your new life. While there are many benefits to living a carefree nomadic existence, it is helpful to have a framework for your daily life.

This can include planning what you will do each day, where you will stay and for how long, and how you will handle relationships (both with people who also travel and folks back home).

Some important parts of the planning process include deciding whether or not you should work (and if so, what kind of work) as well as whether or not you need help from professionals in transitioning from your previous conventional lifestyle.

One fantastic way of generating an evergreen income stream is creating one or several courses that you can promote and sell on autopilot! There are several easy ways, and CoachBox offers you that ability as well as handling all your backend needs, such as payments and nurturing for leads and clients! This allows you to set up an independent business or an independent career.

As much as possible, build community within your network. If traveling alone is more conducive to getting in touch with yourself while creating an independent life, that’s an excellent choice!

But it’s also okay if creating location independence means making plans with friends or family members. While being able to live anywhere is exciting enough on its own, having people around who care about you can bring another dimension of happiness.

If this all sounds overwhelming or scary, just focus on how cool it will be when you achieve your goals!

You’ll feel great every time someone asks where home is for you now—because ‘home’ can be wherever you want it to be.

Some Final Thoughts...

So to summarize, we put these things in progress several years ago, and we have been completely location independent for over 3 years now. Being free to move and do whatever you want does not necessarily need to mean that you travel all the time for us it means that we have the freedom to live, move and travel when we want to.

To us, this means freedom, to not be locked down and need to go to the same office every day or feel stuck in the city you just so happen to live in.

We choose to become independent business owners, rather than digital nomads, when we created our independent lifestyle.

It was easier than we imagined, but still took some planning, thinking, and changes in our life. But i truly believe that if your want to, you to can create your ideal lifestyle starting today!

And a final thing - I believe in you and your dreams.

Now, go and make them a reality!  You Got This!
